INSTITUTE OF RAIN AND MOIST DECIDUOUS FOREST RESEARCH (IRMDFR)


ORGANISATION

This Institute was established in April 1988. The Institute has the responsibility for research in forest and forestry problems of north-eastern region and sikkim. The earstwhile research centre of FRI and Colleges at Burnihat (Assam) has been merged with this Institute.

OBJECTIVES

The Institute has been set up to carryout research on ecology, regeneration, tending and management of forests in the north- eastern ststes and sikkim, conservation methods to preserve the unique heritage of flora found in the region and containment of shifting cultivation. Alongside basic research in rain and moist deciduoud eco-systems at national level,the Institute is also entrusted to undertaken research on forest hydrology.

RESEARCH

Still in its formative phase, the Institute has initiated research on forestry mycrohizal associations in the rain forests of India, collection of bamboo and cane germplasm and their/macro propagation.
