A8 FIELD INVENTORY

A8.1 FOREST AREA

The Forest Survey of India had been conducting field inventory in the forest areas of the country ever since its inception as PISFR in 1965. An inventory report provides total growing stock, vol/ha, distribution of stems, stem/ha, details of area estimates according to land use, legal status, topography, forest strata, incidences of fire, grazing, regeneration status etc. So far more than 130 inventory reports have been published by the FSI. These reports are useful to the State Forest Departments for planning and management.

PISFR had conducted field inventory in the selected areas covering 0.23 million sq.km. upto 1981. After the upgradation and reorganisation of PISFR as FSI in 1981, field inventory of the entire forest area of the country was included in the mandate. Since then an additional area of 0.45 million sq.km has been inventoried constituting about 80% forest area of the country. Some of the areas particularly of the North Eastern region have been inventoried twice. The area covered by field inventory so far, is given in Figure 8.1.

Details of inventories conducted between 1995 and 1997 are given in Table 8.1.

Sampling Design – Forest Area

A common inventory design is followed for the whole country under which the SOI toposheet of 1:50,000 scale is divided into 2.5'X2.5' grids, each grid representing about 18 - 20 sq. km. area. In each grid, two plots of 0.1 ha. each are marked on the toposheets. The selection of the first plot is random and the second plot is the mirror image of the first. The plots falling within the forest area are surveyed.

A8.2 NON - FOREST AREA

From 1991-92 FSI took up inventory of trees growing outside conventional forest areas of the country. The main objective of the inventory is to assess the extent of plantations raised under various social forestry schemes by different agencies. The sampling design, field formats, data processing methodologyhave been developed at the FSI.

A.Sampling Design: The sampling design adopted for this inventory is a two stage stratified sampling. Sampling unit in the first stage is a district and in the second stage is a village. While taking up the survey of a state, optimum number of villages to be surveyed are determined on the basis of data obtained from a pilot survey. The number of villages to be inventoried in a district is decided according to proportional allocation. Trees standing in the selected villages are enumerated and measured by the field parties. Compilation and data processing is done district-wise.

Planted trees are classified in eight categories: Farm forestry, Village woodlot, Block plantation, Road, Pond, Rail, Canal side plantations and others.

3.Terminology

Block plantation - Compact tree plantations covering an area of more than 0.1 ha on private/Govt. land except village community land.

Farm Forestry- Trees growing naturally or planted along farm bunds or in small patches upto 0.1 ha on private lands.

Village woodlot- Naturally growing/planted trees on village community land.

The inventory of the non-forest area of Haryana state has been completed in 1997. The results have been analysed and presented in Table 8.2 and Table 8.3 and anlysis is given in A8.4

A8.4 Analysis

The tables reveal that farm forestry contributes about 41% of the total standing volume of wood in non-forest areas in Haryana, followed by village woodlot (23%), Roadside plantation (13%) and Block plantations (11%). This distribution is presented in Figure 8.2. Among the districts the contribution of volume from farm forestry varies from 76% in Gurgaon to 16% in Bhiwani. This contribution is more than 50% in the districts of Jind, Bhiwani, Hissar, Faridabad, Kurukshetra, Sonipat and Karnal. Further the volume from village woodlot is maximum in Bhiwani (65%) followed by Mahendragarh (43%). In the category of Block plantation Ambala has the maximum (22%) of the total volume followed by Mahendragarh (19%) .

Among the species Acacia nilotica contributes maximum volume (22%) followed by Eucalyptus (21%), Prosopis cineraria (15%), Dalbergia sissoo (12%), Salvadora spp. (3%) and others (19%) as depicted in Figure 8.3. The maximum contribution to the total volume is by A.nilotica in Jind (34%), by Eucalyptus spp. in Ambala (50%), by P.cineraria in Bhiwani (13%) and by Dalbergia sissoo in Hissar (27%).

The total standing volume of wood growing in the non-forest area of Haryana is estimated to be 10.30 million cu.m. whereas in the natural forest areas it is estimated to be 1.41 million cu.m. Though the natural forest area constituting only 1.4% of the geographic area is not comparable to the non-forest area, yet standing volume of wood outside natural forest is 7 times more thereby indicating that the plantation programmes have made a major impact.
