The Paryavaran Vahini Scheme was launched in June, 1992 with the basic objective of encouraging people's participation in environmental protection.The salient features of the Scheme are to create environmental awareness and involve people through active participation and reporting of illegal acts pertaining to forests, wildlife, pollution, environmental degradation and cruelty to animals.The Vahinis are also expected to give feedback regarding afforestation and survival of plants and monitoring of ambient air and water quality including vehicular pollution.
So far 184 districts,covering all the States (except West Bengal) and Union Territories have been selected for constitution of Paryavaran Vahinis and such Vahinis have been constituted in 130 districts.The Vahinis are functioning under the charge of District Collectors, who are expected to take follow-up action on the complaints received from various members of the Vahini by pursuing the matter with the respective authorities.
